THE OFFICIAL MODEL

How does Google charge for its APIs?

There is no single Google API price. Google Maps Platform alone splits into dozens of SKUs (Text Search, Place Details, Geocoding, route matrices, and so on), and every SKU sits in one of three tiers: Essentials, Pro, or Enterprise.

You pay per request, priced per 1,000, and the fields you ask for can move a request into a pricier tier.

The old $200 monthly credit was retired in March 2025. In its place, each SKU carries its own free monthly call count: 10,000 calls for Essentials SKUs, 5,000 for Pro, and 1,000 for Enterprise.

Outside Maps Platform, the Custom Search JSON API runs a separate meter entirely: 100 free queries a day, then $5.00 per 1,000, and it is now closed to new customers.

Rates also step down on volume: above 100,000 calls a month prices drop roughly 20%, and they keep falling past 500,000, 1 million, and 5 million.

That grid of tier times volume is the pricing matrix people search for, and it is further down this page.

How much does the Google API cost?

The five Google API families people usually mean when they search for Google API pricing, at the base rate before volume discounts. Each row links to the full breakdown with the worked math:

Maps Platform figures from Google Maps Platform pricing; Custom Search figures from the Custom Search JSON API overview. Both checked August 4, 2026. For Places requests, asking for phone, website, hours, or ratings moves the call to the Enterprise rate.

TIER TIMES VOLUME

The Google API pricing matrix

Every Maps Platform SKU prices on a grid: the tier sets the base rate, and monthly volume steps it down. Here is the full matrix for the SKU business-data work usually lands on, Text Search at the Enterprise tier (the one that includes phone, website, hours, and ratings):

Monthly volumePrice per 1,000 calls
First 1,000Free
Up to 100,000$35.00
100,001 to 500,000$28.00
500,001 to 1,000,000$21.00
1,000,001 to 5,000,000$10.50
Over 5,000,000$2.63

Two things to keep in mind while you budget from a matrix like this. You bill per request whatever comes back, so an empty search costs the same as a full one.

And the deep discounts start at volumes most projects never reach: the price most teams actually pay is the top row.

THE ONE THAT IS CLOSING

Does Google charge for the Custom Search API?

Yes. The Custom Search JSON API gives you 100 free queries a day, then bills $5.00 per 1,000 queries up to a hard cap of 10,000 queries a day. The free allowance resets at midnight and unused queries do not carry over.

The bigger issue is that pricing is no longer the question. Per Google's own overview page, the API is closed to new customers, and existing customers have until January 1, 2027 to move to an alternative.

If your product calls it today, the full picture and the migration math are on our Custom Search API shutdown page.

FAIR PLAY

When the official APIs are the right buy: you are building live features inside an app (map views, autocomplete, routing, place lookups), you want Google's SLA and support contracts, or your legal team requires a Google-billed product. The embedded maps and mobile SDKs stay free with no cap, and the platform is built for apps.

THE FLAT ALTERNATIVE

The flat-rate alternative

If what you need is the data rather than the embedded product, CrustAPI serves 13 Google search types (web, maps, places, news, shopping, images, videos, reviews, scholar, patents, autocomplete, webpage, lens) on one key and one request charge pool.

Every type bills one charge per search, except Maps, which bills the Maps rate per business returned. A search that returns nothing is free.

Your balance covers all Google endpoints. Maps bills per business; the other Google endpoints bill per successful request. Each deposit saves its own endpoint rates.

What data do you get?

One request, straight from the docs to a terminal. Here's the result as CSV first, then the same record as JSON. This pull came back in under a second:

# Maps bills the Maps rate per business returned; zero results cost nothing curl "https://crustapi.com/v1/search?type=maps&q=electricians%20in%20Austin,%20TX&limit=3" -H "x-api-key: YOUR_KEY"
# CSV view; same records as the JSON below, rows 1 and 3 trimmed, phone masked title, placeId,address, phone, website, categoryName, totalScore, reviewsCount, lat, lng ... // JSON view. Every Maps record includes name, address, phone, website, rating, review count, categories, and hours, with no field tiers to configure. The API returns JSON; the playground can also hand you the same rows as CSV.

Swap type=maps for type=web, type=reviews, or any of the other types and the key and the funds stay the same.

BEFORE YOU ASK

Common questions

There is no single price. Each Google API bills per SKU: Text Search runs $32 to $35 per 1,000 calls, Place Details $17 to $20, Geocoding $5.00, route matrices $5.00 to $15.00 by tier, and the Custom Search JSON API $5.00 per 1,000 queries. Rates step down above 100,000 calls a month. All figures checked against Google's pricing pages on August 4, 2026.

Yes. After 100 free queries a day, it bills $5.00 per 1,000 queries up to a cap of 10,000 queries a day. It is also closed to new customers, and Google says existing customers have until January 1, 2027 to move to an alternative.

No. The $200 monthly credit was retired in March 2025. Each Maps Platform SKU now carries its own free monthly call count: 10,000 for Essentials, 5,000 for Pro, and 1,000 for Enterprise. Embedded maps and the mobile SDKs stay free with no cap.

The grid of tier times volume that sets every Maps Platform rate. The tier (Essentials, Pro, or Enterprise) sets the base price, and monthly volume steps it down: Text Search Enterprise falls from $35.00 per 1,000 under 100,000 calls to $2.63 past 5 million. The fields you request decide the tier.

Google Search costs $1.00 per 1,000 successful requests at standard prices, down to $0.20 for the largest deposit. Empty and failed searches are free. Every eligible account gets $6 of free usage monthly. Paid funds never expire.

No. Paid funds never expire, so an unused pack waits for your next project. It is also free to try with no card, and the same balance work across all 13 Google search types on one key.
